Changes to Spanish VAT rates for food & feminine hygiene products
As part of its Budget 2023 Law, the Spanish authority approved the zero-rating of foodstuffs in the country. In addition to this, the reduced VAT rate of 5% will now apply to pasta and oil.
The zero rating and decrease of VAT rate of these products are one of the tax measures adopted by the government to mitigate the impact of inflation on Spanish households.
In addition to this, with effect from 1 January 2023, the new VAT rate applicable to sanitary products is decreased from 10% to 4% in Spain.
As well as tampons, panty liners and pads, the new reduced VAT rate is also applicable to condoms and non-medicinal contraceptives, making these products deemed as “essentials”.
