Is there a GST Threshold in Australia?

There is a GST threshold in Australia – a pretty generous A$75,000 annual GST turnover. The GST turnover is the total revenue you’ve made in Australia, minus:

  • B2B sales
  • GST
  • Sales that aren’t taxable
  • Input-taxed sales

You’ll need to register if:

  • Your current GST turnover (this month and the last 11) reaches the threshold
  • Your projected GST turnover (this month and the next 11) will reach it
Not sure whether certain sales count towards your GST turnover? We can help you work it out.

GST on Imports

Goods imported into Australia are split into two categories:

  • Low-Value Goods (customs value less than A$1000)
  • High-Value Goods (customs value more than A$1000)

The customs value is the price you charged your customer, minus shipping and insurance. The GST, duties and fees on high-value shipments are paid at the border by your customers. Australian customs will hold the package until everything’s paid for. However, once you’re registered for GST, you have to charge it at checkout.

VAT to Australia

Exporting from Europe to Australia? You won’t need to charge VAT to Australian customers. However, if you’re registered for GST, you will need to charge them GST at checkout.
