Moving goods between EU countries? SimplyVAT helps ecommerce businesses prepare and file Intrastat declarations, check commodity codes, review reporting thresholds and manage monthly Intrastat returns without extra admin stress.
INTRASTAT REPORTS MADE EASY
Unlike VAT returns, Intrastat declarations are transactional. They’re reported by SKU and require a lot of extra data – weight, commodity codes, net sales value, how the goods were shipped.
They’re one of those things that only get easier to do with practice. Fortunately, we’ve had lots of practice.
WHAT IS AN INTRASTAT REPORT?
An Intrastat report is statistical data, showing the amount of goods a business has moved between EU countries.
It Includes:
Stock moved between warehouses in different countries
Sales shipped from one EU country to another
Purchases made in one EU country and delivered to a warehouse in another.
When the EU became a single market, import documents and border formalities between member states were removed. Intrastat returns replace those things, so tax authorities and statistics departments across the EU can still get a sense of what’s moving across borders.
DON’T DO ANY MORE PAPERWORK THAN YOU HAVE TO
The thing with Intrastat reports is that once you start filing them, you have to do it for a long time. You’ll have to do these reports every month from when you cross the threshold until the end of that year then one whole calendar year until you fall under the threshold!
It’s not all bad news! If you’re filing Intrastat returns it tends to mean you’re making a lot of money. The flipside is that you might never stop filing these reports. It doesn’t have to be a burden though - we’re here to help.
You may need to file Intrastat declarations when your business moves goods between EU countries and exceeds the reporting threshold in the relevant country. Intrastat requirements usually apply to goods movements, not services, and thresholds can differ for arrivals and dispatches.
What Information Is Needed For Intrastat Filing?
Intrastat filing is transactional, so businesses often need product-level data such as commodity codes, goods value, net mass, quantity, country of dispatch or arrival, delivery terms and movement type. This is why Intrastat reports can take longer than a standard VAT return.
Intrastat Codes and Commodity Codes
Intrastat codes are usually 8-digit EU Combined Nomenclature codes used to classify goods. The European Commission explains that CN codes are 8-digit codes based on the Harmonized System with EU-specific subdivisions.
Intrastat Reporting Thresholds
Each country in the European Union sets thresholds for when businesses need to file Intrastat reports. There are two thresholds, one for Arrivals and one for Dispatches. Arrivals is a record of the amount arriving into an EU state, and Dispatches shows the amount leaving.
Yes, if you’ve passed the threshold for filing Intrastat reports in an EU country. Like VAT Returns, they’re a legal requirement and the penalties for not doing them are pretty steep.
Intrastat codes are also known as Commodity Codes. They’re the Combined Nomenclature 8-digit code (CN8) used to classify goods in the EU.
Intrastat is a combination of the words “Intracommunity” and “Statisitc”. Intracommunity is the word used to describe things that happen between EU States. Intrastat reports cover the movement of goods between EU Member States.
Intrastat declarations, returns and reports are just different names for the same thing. When you file an Intrastat report you’re making an official declaration about the goods you’ve moved between EU countries.
Intrastat reporting is the process of putting together and filing an Intrastat report. There’s no unified process or deadline for filing the reports, so it varies between countries.
Not quite – the codes used in Intrastat reports are the CN8 Commodity codes used in the EU. CN8 codes are based on HS Codes (the first 6 digits are from the HS code) but have EU-specific subdivisions.
Since the UK has left the EU, the UK’s Intrastat threshold only applies to goods moving between Northern Ireland and the EU. If you pass the threshold, you’ll have to submit Intrastat reports.
