Do I need a VAT number for Shopify?

You don’t need a VAT number to set up a Shopify store, but you might need to register for VAT depending on:

Where your customers are
Where you’re based
Where your goods are stored
Whether you cross a turnover threshold

How to add VAT on Shopify

To add VAT on Shopify, you first need to set up VAT in the settings. Go to Settings > Taxes and Duties. In the countries/region section, select where you’re selling. Click “Collect VAT” and enter your VAT number. Shopify will then automatically calculate and apply the correct VAT rates at checkout based on your customers’ locations.

How to charge VAT on Shopify

Shopify will automatically charge your customers their local VAT rate once you’ve entered your VAT number in the Tax settings. You may need to set up tax overrides for your products if a country’s standard rate doesn’t apply.

Is there VAT on Shopify fees?

Shopify charges VAT on its fees if you’re based in Ireland or Switzerland. If you’re based in the UK or the rest of the EU, Shopify doesn’t charge VAT but you’ll have to account for it on your VAT return via the reverse charge mechanism.
